PINBALL

How to Play Pinball: Rules, Controls and Scoring for Complete Beginners

Pinball looks chaotic from the outside — a ball ricocheting between flashing bumpers while someone hammers two buttons. In reality it’s a game of control: you never choose where the ball goes, but with good flipper technique you choose where it can’t go. Here’s everything a new player needs, from the plunger to the jackpot.

The goal of the game

You launch a steel ball onto an angled playfield and use two flippers at the bottom to keep it in play as long as possible. Everything the ball hits can score: bumpers, targets, ramps, spinners. The ball eventually drains between the flippers or down an outlane — and then the next ball launches. A game is usually 3 balls. Score as much as you can before they’re gone.

Controls

The three shots that matter

Aimed flipper shots. A held flipper turns the ball’s momentum into a deliberate direction — this is the core skill of pinball. Let the ball roll down the flipper face before flipping: flipping while the ball is still moving up the face sends it wild, flipping when it reaches the tip sends it across the table.

Catching. Hold a flipper up and let the ball rest on it. A catch converts a chaotic ball into a controlled one — from a catch you can aim any lane on the table.

Trapping. When the ball rolls to rest on a raised flipper against the inlane wall, you have all the time in the world to choose your next shot.

Rules you’ll meet on almost every modern table

How this works on our Cyber Neon table

On Cyber Neon all of the above applies, plus a few table-specific twists: a 5-hit bumper combo triggers Overcharge (every score on the table is doubled until you drain), completing orbit laps inside 4 seconds chains LOOP COMBO bonuses, and filling the 15-cell hunt meter opens a five-mission hunt chain — finish all five and collect the Super Jackpot to unlock the Wizard showdown.
